Taronga Zoo is high on the must-do list. There are more than 4,000 animals, including native favourites such as koalas, kangaroos and platypuses. The giraffe enclosure has one of the best harbour views in town and its Wildlife Retreat is a unique luxury eco-experience.

Military Road is a delightful high street with an eclectic range of stores. There are designer boutiques housed in heritage listed buildings, independent homewares and speciality studios which offer something unique. Shop up a storm then stop for a coffee break at one of the many cute cafes peppered along the strip.

Mosman is home to many harbourside beaches, but the jewel in the crown is Balmoral Beach. It's a European-style swimming spot with calm waters rather than big waves, making it a relaxing, family-friendly option. There are also enclosed harbour baths and enchanting picnic spots to enjoy.

Nearby is Middle Head, where you’ll find an 1801-built fort and other defensive structures. The mesmerising views span out to Sydney Harbour’s entrance, known as The Heads - beyond that is the sparkling Pacific Ocean. South of Middle Head is Chowder Bay, a popular spot for snorkelling and diving.

The natural beauty of Mosman offers superb foreshore walks, such as the Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay walk. On the northern side of Mosman is The Spit, where you can start, or finish, the Manly to Spit Bridge Walk. Alternatively, join a kayaking tour on one of the world’s great natural harbours or explore the area's other attractions.

Eat & drink

The acclaimed Bathers’ Pavilion restaurant, in a heritage-listed white building right on Balmoral Beach, serves gourmet food and there's a rooftop bar. For a more casual option head to The Boathouse Balmoral Beach, which is right on the water. For takeaway fish 'n chips join the queue at Bottom of the Harbour Seafoods.

The Spit is home to fine dining Italian restaurant Ormeggio and its more casual sister restaurant, Chiosco by Ormeggio which are both set right on the water. Military Road has you covered with lots of options but if you want views, the rooftop bar at The Fernery is hard to beat or go for high tea at Gunners Barracks.

Getting there

The easiest, and most enjoyable, way to get to Mosman is by catching a ferry from Circular Quay. The scenic trip is only 12 mins, and you also get to enjoy the harbour. If you'd prefer to drive over the Harbour Bridge, catch a bus from the CBD which will get you there in about 20 mins.
